Walerian Borowczyk: Make me Scream Again
08.09 - 10.09.2016 MOTELx
In collaboration with the collective White Noise, MOTELX presents an homage to Walerian Borowczyk (1923-2006), a filmmaker whose work has been studied internationally, but who hasn’t achieved recognition in Portugal yet.

Born in Poland, Walerian Borowczyk built a body of work that confronted notions of innocence and experience, authority and sexuality, using a tone influenced by surrealism and primitive cinema, crossing several subjects from cinema, to writing, design, painting, and sculpting. In the April 1996 edition of Sight & Sound magazine, Chris Newby states: «I’ve never seen a portrait of Walerian Borowczyk, which makes me happy. I like to imagine him as a man of few words, in his 70s, (...). The curator of its own erotic museum, deep in some forest, somewhere in rural France. (...) Maybe it’s convenient that Borowczyk’s films are an obscure pleasure that require some effort in finding them, as if they were old books in some dusty library.»

The programme “Walerian Borowczyk: Make Me Scream Again” rediscovers two of his most relevant works, “The Beast” (1975) and “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne” (1981), both as restored copies, and contextualizes his work with the masterclass “One Man Band: Walerian Borowczyk”, hosted by Daniel Bird, one of the biggest Borowczyk specialists and responsible for his work’s reevaluation who will also be present at the films’ screenings for a brief introduction and some surprises not included in the programme.
